LOCSS Team members Install a gauge in Lake Waccamaw, NC in 2017
On April 18, 2017, LOCSS team members travelled to southeastern North Carlina to install lake gauges in six lakes: Bay Tree Lake, Jones Lake, Lake Waccamaw, Singletary Lake, Salters Lake, and White Lake. These would be the first six lakes that would be studied using data from citizen scientists and satellites, the first lakes included in the LOCSS project. In the nearly 9 years since that day, LOCSS has grown leaps and bounds, thanks to committed local partners, dedicated volunteers and financial support from NASA.
In those 9 years, the LOCSS project has grown to include 281 lakes in 11 countries on 5 continents! In that time, we have engaged more than 11,000 volunteer citizen scientists, who have contributed nearly 87,000 measurements. We've learned a lot about lakes, the water cycle, and how accurate satellites can be when measuring water on earth.
We are so thankful for our partners, citizen scientists and NASA who have made this work possible. below is a snapshot reflecting where LOCSS stands today. Stick with us as we continue to grow for years to come!
Status of LOCSS as of March, 2026
We share stories about the lakes in our study, our partners and volunteer citizen scientists, as well as interesting results from our research.
