1,000 Lake Level Measurements!

Great Lake in Croatan National Forest, the site of the Lake Level Monitoring Project’s 1000th lake height measurement.
Recently, the Lake Level Monitoring Project reached a major milestone, receiving the project’s 1,000th lake level measurement.

A citizen scientist texted the level for Great Lake in the Croatan National Forest, North Carolina. at 12:56 PM on Monday, May 14. Great Lake is a nearly 3,000 acre carolina bay lake. It is a naturally acidic lake that is home to a few species of fish as well as the American Alligator. Lake heights for Great lake are measured at a gauge attached to a dock at the boat ramp (see picture).

We began measuring lake levels when we installed a lake gauge at Prairie Ridge Ecostation in Raleigh, NC on February 24, 2017. We are amazed that we have reached the 1,000 measurement milestone in less than 15 months of measuring lake levels and are thankful to our wonderful partners and volunteer citizen scientists who have continued to support us.

We are excited about reaching this milestone, and can’t wait to find out what the next 1,000 lake measurements will teach us.
